GCTU Celebrates World Engineering Day With Showcase Of Innovation
The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has commemorated World Engineering Day with a grand celebration of technological innovations on 4th March 2024 at the Main Campus.
The celebration was championed by the Faculty of Engineering in collaboration with the Engineering Students Association (ESA) of GCTU and the Ghana Armed Forces Signal Unit.
The event featured a two-part programme aimed at highlighting the significance of engineering in sustainable development and showcasing technological innovations.
The event kicked off with a panel discussion featuring four esteemed panelists who delved into various aspects of Engineering and its impact on society. The discussion covered topics such as the impact of digitalization on engineering, the role of engineers in shaping the future, and the importance of developing digital proficiency in today’s Engineering landscape.
The Technical Director of Kasapreko Company Limited and Guest of Honour for the occasion, Ing. Sylvester Otiende Ogese, delivered an engaging address focused on “the role of Engineering students in driving innovation and shaping the future of industry.” Ing. Ogese emphasized the importance of problem-solving skills, urging students to embrace new technologies and prepare themselves for the evolving demands of the industry.
Sharing his thoughts on the impact of digitalization on Engineering, Mr. Barnabas Aban, representing the CEO of Prime Infrastructure, Mr. Daniel Ekow Aggrey, highlighted how digital transformation has revolutionized the Engineering sector, emphasizing the importance of equipping businesses with the right technology for sustainable growth. He discussed the role of cloud computing, digital twin technology and augmented reality in shaping the future of Engineering.
The CEO of Tudu Technologies and an alumnus of GCTU, Mr. Joseph Ekpaha Kwofie, emphasized the power of connection in Engineering, sharing his journey from a student status to an entrepreneur and the significant role engineers play in shaping our daily lives.
The CEO of Soko Aerial Robotics and Director of the Ghana Armed Forces Drone Services, Ing. Kofi Owusu Edusei provided a detailed overview of the innovative technologies developed for enhancing security and disaster management. His presentation showcased the practical applications of drone technology in addressing critical challenges along the northern borders of Ghana and supporting military operations.
A highlight of the event was the presentation by the Manager for Digital Platforms at MTN Ghana, Mr. Kelvin Ashi, who introduced the Ayoba application. Ayoba, described as MTN’s all-in-one super messaging app, offers a range of functionalities including messaging, money transfers, music streaming, and more, all accessible for free without consuming data. Mr. Ashi also shared details about the Ayoba ‘Invite and Earn’ initiative, which rewards users with free data for inviting friends and family to join the Ayoba platform.
The event also featured presentations of awards to deserving members of the faculty, industry and alumni for their significant contributions to society and academia. Notable among the awardees were the Special Guest for the celebration, Ing. Sylvester Otiende Ogese, the CEO of Soko Aerial Robotics, an alumnus of GCTU, Ing. Kofi Owusu Adusei and a lecturer at the Engineering Faculty, Ing. Theophilus Ashitey who has been teaching at the faculty for over 15 years. Additionally, special recognition was given to the CEO of Tudu Technologies and alumnus of GCTU, Mr. Joseph Ekpaha Kwofie, a Lab Technician at the Faculty, Mr. Gabriel Blanton Gidisu and CEO of Prime Infrastructure, Mr. Daniel Ekow Aggrey.
The second part of the programme featured an exhibition of technological innovations by the faculty, Engineering students of GCTU, and other notable Senior High Schools including Accra Academy students.
The exhibition showcased a wide range of engineering innovations, including prototypes of a mechanized cocoa processing plant, drones, automatic waste bins and more. The event provided an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and ingenuity in addressing societal challenges through Engineering solutions.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Ruhiya Abubakar, expressed her excitement about the event and emphasized the importance of celebrating World Engineering Day to raise awareness about the role of Engineering in sustainable development. She commended the efforts of the faculty, students and industry partners in making the event a success.
The celebration of World Engineering Day at GCTU highlighted the University’s commitment to promoting innovation and excellence in Engineering education through collaborative efforts and a focus on cutting-edge technology.
